Sunset in Oaxaca

  Sunset in Oaxaca
With the sunset ending my time in Oaxaca, it was not such a happy ending as I fell ill. It wasn’t my favourite place. Controversially the food (despite a lot of research) wasn’t very good. I read Oaxaca was the home of fine cuisine in Mexico, alas no… don’t believe the hype.
Oaxaca felt like a bit of a tourist trap, not the authentic Mexico we were looking for. A Instagram heaven with its painted walls and cocktail bars but not something I particularly enjoyed. Obviously I enjoyed the cocktails and especially the Mescal.
The sunset was the last of the photos I took in Oaxaca before I descended into a world of pain. I mustered the strength to see in the new year. Where we met two Americans on a mountain bike tour in a cocktail and mescal bar where we had planned to start but not finish our New Year’s celebrations. One of them was nursing a broken arm (an unlucky fall on the first day of their biking), so we all decided to soldier through the night together. Super lovely guys and its always a pleasure to meet likeminded people on my travels.
Surprisingly on our hotel terrace the day we were moving on we also met a couple who live not just in the same town as us but on the next street over from ours. Seeing as there where only 6 rooms in the hotel, it was the beginning of our paths crossing as we appeared to be taking the same route as them north.
The night we moved on I probably had the worst 12 hours known to mankind.  On a night bus to San Cristobal de las Casas, every minute was a tricky/horrific/painful moment. 12 hours of vomiting and frequent missions to the bathroom as the bus wound through the hills of central Mexico. Arriving in San Cristobal I was relieved but also learnt a little bit more about myself. The bus certainly got to know me very well!
